For blind and deaf dogs, touch cues can open up a language that helps them understand what is happening around them, what to expect next, and what we are asking them to do. More importantly, touch cues can help create predictability and consistency, leading to feelings of safety, trust, and confidence for our dogs.

Dogs that struggle to calm down and relax can be exhausting to live with. Often their families are told to give them more exercise, enrichment, training or structure, but these are rarely the solution. For Delight, sensitivity often shows up as overwhelm. Sometimes that overwhelm looks quiet - she may freeze, pause, or seem unresponsive, as if she’s shut down or “checked out.” Other times, it looks like the opposite: she becomes overstimulated, overly excited, mouthy, and unable to settle. To an outside observer, this can look like stubbornness. Like ignoring cues. Like a dog who “knows better” but won’t comply.
